Entering this field requires dedication and hard work, but the rewards are worth it. If you’re interested, read about what education and steps you’ll need to take for how to become a structural engineer.

What Degree Is Necessary to Become a Structural Engineer

As the need for engineers grows, there’s never been a better time to become one yourself. But how do you start?

You can technically become a structural engineer with just a bachelor’s degree. However, many students pursue a master’s degree or complete a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program that can be accomplished in five years.

You must earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, mathematics, or a related field. After completing your undergraduate studies, you can achieve a Master of Science in Structural Engineering or a related field.

How to Become a Licensed Structural Engineer

  1. Get your FE certificate. It is the initial phase for those wondering how to become a licensed professional in the field. You’ll need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam to earn your certificate.
  2. Complete the EIT program. Once you’ve earned your FE certification, you can enroll in an Engineer in Training (EIT) program. This program will help you prepare for the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam, which is a requirement for licensure.
  3. Complete your licensure. Once you’ve passed these two exams, you’ll be eligible for licensure. It involves completing an application and passing an ethics exam in most states. Research your particular state’s requirements for more information.

How Can You Stand Out in the Field?

First, consider joining professional organizations related to the field. It will help you network with other professionals in the engineering field and help you stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends and developments.

Internships are another way for you to both improve your skills while also rounding out your resume. You’ll be able to work closely with established professionals in the industry and learn more about what your career will look like.
